Rajasthan to Commission 1,000 MWh Battery Storage by September

Rajasthan is advancing its energy transition strategy with plans to commission 1,000 MWh of battery energy storage capacity by September through Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam (RVUNL), marking a significant milestone in the state's renewable energy infrastructure development.

The project forms part of RVUNL’s broader 6,000 MWh battery storage programme, with the remaining capacity scheduled for completion by September 2027. The initiative is designed to enhance grid stability, optimise the utilisation of renewable energy resources, and reduce the curtailment of surplus solar power generation across the state.

In parallel, the Rajasthan Renewable Energy Corporation has proposed an additional 6,000 MWh battery energy storage project integrated with 2,450 MW of solar generation capacity at the upcoming Pugal Solar Park. The proposal is currently awaiting approval from the Rajasthan Electricity Regulatory Commission (RERC), following which the tendering process is expected to commence.

The state’s push toward large-scale energy storage follows the introduction of RERC’s Battery Energy Storage System Regulations, which provide a comprehensive framework for the planning, procurement, ownership, and operation of storage assets. The regulations are intended to support renewable energy integration, peak load management, voltage and frequency regulation, transmission congestion mitigation, and the provision of ancillary grid services.

By enabling utility-owned, developer-owned, and consumer-owned storage systems while mandating competitive bidding for large-scale deployments, the regulatory framework is expected to encourage investment, accelerate adoption, and strengthen Rajasthan’s position as a leader in renewable energy and grid modernisation.
